A Weekend of Learning, Coding, and Community

On 11th and 12th September, 2025 the town of Abraka buzzed with excitement as aspiring women developers gathered for the Django Girls Abraka 2025 Workshop—a two-day event focused on teaching web development using Python and Django. The mission was to empower women with the skills to build their very own blog from scratch—and more importantly, to take their first big step into the world of tech.

Django Girls is a global non-profit organization that helps women get into tech by organizing free programming workshops, creating resources, and building inclusive communities. These events are beginner-friendly, require no prior coding experience, and provide a supportive environment for women to explore software development.

The Abraka edition stayed true to this spirit, bringing together participants, coaches, and volunteers to learn, connect, and create. The workshop was inclusive and the participants and coaches were not just from Abraka, some came outside Delta State.

🛠️ What We Built

Over the course of two days, participants followed the official Django Girls tutorial and built a fully functional blog website. Here’s a breakdown of what they learned:

  • Python Basics – Understanding variables, functions, and data types.

  • Django Fundamentals – Learning how Django works as a web framework.

  • Templates & Views – Creating dynamic pages using Django’s template system.

  • Models & Admin – Building a data model for blog posts and managing them via Django’s powerful admin panel.

  • Deployment – Making their blog live on the internet using PythonAnywhere (this was not achieved due to time factor).

By the end of the workshop, every participant had built their own simple blog site—a huge achievement for anyone new to coding!

While building the blog was the technical highlight, the true value of the workshop was in the confidence it built and the community it fostered. For many attendees, it was their first time writing code. For others, it was the first time they saw a place for themselves in the tech world.

The event also featured:

  • 🧑🏽‍🏫 Hands-on mentorship from volunteer coaches

  • 💬 Panel discussions on women in tech

  • 🌐 Networking opportunities with local developers and tech leaders

  • 🍕 Food, fun, and friendship throughout the weekend

💬 Echos from the Workshop

“Before this workshop, I didn’t know where to start with programming. Now, I’ve built a blog and can’t wait to learn more!”Precious Itedjere, First-time participant

“The smiles, the breakthroughs, the ‘aha’ moments—seeing women take charge of tech was beautiful.”Christabel Okafor, Volunteer coach
